United in Kindness

Dec 17th, 2007 | By Kelly Mead | Category: Editorial

This post is off-topic but it’s important enough that we thought we had to do it.

There are so many things that will be written about today that people have done to help another that we first want to acknowledge all those others for their selflessness.

Our Acts of Kindness that we opted to write about is something everyone can do and we believe you will be amazed at the difference it can make to someone.

Smile and compliment a stranger, friend, foe, loved one, etc. for no other reason then they are there. Hundreds of hours a year I volunteer at my children’s schools, and helping others, but nothing makes me feel as good as I do when someone smiles because they received a complement and a smile when they saw me. Meeting strangers eyes as I go about my daily business and making sure to say hi to those I pass and actually see me though it surprises most of them.

If a yawn is contagious then so is a smile, I believe even more so.  Especially to children. The main school where I volunteer I try to make sure I smile at every child I pass and find a compliment for them. Letting people know that you noticed them, not just that they’re another warm body, but something about them, can be a precious gift.

Everyone has something they are proud of about themselves and if you really start to look it usually easy to see.  Giving the gift of being recognized as a person in this world is a wonderful act of kindness, it helps to show us that we are all connected. If we all really start to see our neighbors, co-workers, cashier at the market, stranger on the street, etc. maybe this world could change in a big way from such a small thing.  If everyone could feel acknowledged as a person then trying to find 15 minutes of fame, money, drugs or whatever vice they use, just wouldn’t seem so important to everyone.  Then we could start to work on all the things wrong in our world so that we could make time for the truly important thing being part of it.
